History of Upsilon Xi

What's so great about Upsilon ??????

Upsilon Xi is the oldest and most accomplished fraternity on the campus of Lee University. Originally founded in 1962, the members and alumni of Upsilon Xi have dedicated themselves to embodying I Cor 10:31, Whether therefore ye eat, drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” God has been gracious to the men and women of Upsilon, and has blessed us with a tradition that is unlike any other. At Upsilon's 35th Anniversary in 1997, Lee University President Dr. Paul Conn stated that, “It is an unquestionable fact that the men of Upsilon Xi have produced more leading ministers among our denomination, more doctors in the medical and academic field, and more success stories within the world of business than any other club, choir, or organization on the Lee College campus."

Some accomplishments of Upsilon Xi:

In the history of the Church of God, only Upsilon Xi has had a member of its fraternity serve on the Senior Executive Committee. At the 70th COG General Assembly held in August of 2004 the two highest offices in the Church of God were awarded to Upsilon men: the General Overseer (Dr. G. Dennis McGuire) and 1st Asst. General Overseer (Dr. Raymond Culpepper). Never before has the General Overseer had a Lee University club affiliation. In addition to these offices, Upsilon alum Loran Livingston was selected to serve on the "Council of 18."
Upsilon men have won the “Lee University Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award” (The highest honor a Lee University alumnus can receive) 9 times during the 20 years from 1988-2007:

- 1994 - Dr. Dennis McGuire
- 1999 - Dr. Raymond Culpepper
- 2001 - Marty Smith
- 2002 - Dr. W. Donald Price

Upsilon men have won the “F.J. Lee Award” (The highest honor a Lee University student can receive) 9 times during the 20 years from 1981-2000:
- 1981 - Dan Stone
- 1983 - Rod Stansky
- 1985 - Robert Daugherty
- 1989 - Ralph Morris
- 1990 - Andrew Lee
- 1993 - Tony Colson
- 1994 - Jason Hendren
- 1996 - Matt Brumlow
- 2000 - Paul Sausville
Upsilon Xi was the first fraternity to have a member elected:
- SGA President (Junus Fulbright- 1965)
- SGA Vice-President (Ted Gee - 1963
- Junior class President (John Lombard - 1964)
- Soph class President (Junus Fulbright - 1963)
- Freshmen class President (Jim McClain - 1963)
Upsilon Xi had 7 consecutive male class presidents (1989-1998).
23 Upsilon men and women graduated “with honors” from 2000-2003.
A Upsilon little sister was named “Homecoming Queen” for four consecutive years from 1998-2002

At least 5 Upsilon Xi men have sat on the Board of Directors of Lee University for the past decade, including the last two Chairmen of the Board, Dr. Raymond Culpepper and Darrell Rice.
Upsilon raised over $80,000 to build and donate “the Clocktower” to Lee University as an act of service.
An overwhelming percentage of Upsilon men have completed advanced degrees and currently serve as physicians, lawyers, pastors, professors, and prominent businessmen.

Such a rich tradition was not forged overnight, but has been the product of many years of hard work and service. From the original eight members to the current group, each man has pursued Christian excellence and has continued to advance the values that Upsilon Xi hold dear. Among these values, nothing is held dearer than the concept of “Hickory.” Many people have asked, “What is Hickory?” Well, it is many things:

Highly consistent with Christian values, beliefs, and goals

For members of Upsilon Xi to attempt to embody and live every day of their life

In a word. . .Awesome

So, does that clear everything up? No, I didn’t think so. The important thing to know about Hickory is that it is something that Upsilon men and women hold dear and should be treated with dignity and respect.
