State of Tennessee
House of Representatives
House Joint Resolution #725
By Representative Kevin Brooks and Senator Bell
A Resolution to honor and congratulate Upsilon Xi fraternity upon the
occasion of its 50th Anniversary.
Whereas Upsilon Xi was founded at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee by
Duran Palmertree, James Hubbard, Dale Huff, and Duane Lambert in the summer of
196; and
Whereas united in Judeo-Christian principles of brotherhood and service to
others, young men of Upsilon Xi form a profound bond of fraternal love and exude
a unison force in mission to develop a culture of excellence, centering on the
non-negotiables of strong fellowship, extensive service, and solid academic
expectations; and
Whereas chartered on September 26, 1962, Upsilon Xi is the oldest and most
accomplished fraternity on the campus of Lee University, producing more
prominent ministers, doctors in the medical and academic fields, and more
success stories within the world of business than any other campus organization;
and
Whereas in addition to the founders, five men rounded out Upsilon Xi’s charter
membership roster; they were Richard Goodman, Billy J./ O’Neal, Jim McClain,
Donnie Shoemaker, and Roger Coursen; and
Whereas Upsilon Xi’s founding members selected as the Club Scripture I
Corinthians Chapter 10, Verse 31, “Whether therefore ye eat, drink, or
whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”: and
Whereas under the veil of this precious biblical mantra, Upsilon Xi has stood
the test of time and has become a strong and God-glorifying organization that
has provided consistent and dedicated service of the campus of Lee University
and beyond for half a century; and
Whereas Lee University has become one of the largest Christ-centered private
institutions of higher learning in Tennessee, and its premier fraternity,
Upsilon Xi, has nurtured the well-being and fostered the spiritual development
of fine men who are now serving the Churches of God throughout the southeastern
United States and beyond; and
Whereas most notable of Upsilon Xi’s service projects is the “Sadie Hawkins”
event, Lee University’s oldest annual tradition. Other significant
projects over the years have included the “Love Atlanta Run” (1987), The Upsilon
XI Clocktower project (1989-1994), and the Ceremonial Mace (2003).
Faithfully and selflessly Upsilon Xi brothers have raised funds and given of the
time to minister to individuals and community needs as they became known; and
Whereas it is fitting and proper that this General Assembly should pursue in its
deliberations to consider those organizations that are value-based and
intrinsically driven to develop character and moral fortitude among young men
and women who are our nation’s spiritual, governmental, and societal leaders in
waiting now, therefore,
Be It Resolved BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED SEVERTH
GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, that we
hereby congratulate the officers and members, both past and present, of upsilon
XI fraternity of Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, upon the occasion of
their 50th Anniversary, and we extend our best wishes for every success for this
fine organization in the years to come.
